Make compounding tangible

Rule of 72

A simple shortcut for estimating how long an amount could take to double.

Divide 72 by a positive annual percentage rate to estimate doubling time. At a hypothetical 6% annual rate, the shortcut gives approximately 12 years.

The shortcut assumes a constant rate. It is not a forecast, and its accuracy varies with the rate and compounding convention.

Questions worth considering

  • The shortcut is undefined at a zero rate.
  • It excludes taxes, fees, contributions, and withdrawals.
  • It can also illustrate rising prices or debt costs.
